Texas TDLR barber & cosmetology license renewal and continuing education

Direct answer: Texas barber and cosmetology practitioner licenses renew on a two-year cycle. Continuing education must be completed in the two years before renewal through TDLR-approved courses.

For renewals on or after September 1, 2025, licensees with fewer than 15 years of Texas licensure generally need 4 CE hours: 1 hour sanitation, 1 hour human trafficking prevention, and 2 elective hours in approved topics. Licensees with 15 or more years generally need 2 hours: sanitation plus human trafficking prevention. (16 TAC §83.25; TDLR announcements.)

Keep your course completion certificates for two years. Providers report completions to TDLR; if a certificate is missing, contact the provider first.

Establishment licenses are separate and also renew (establishment application fees published by TDLR include $78 for a standard establishment and $70 for a mini-establishment, each typically valid two years from issuance — confirm current fees on tdlr.texas.gov before applying).
