Texas guide
Do Texas stylists and barbers need liability insurance?
Direct answer: TDLR does not generally make personal liability insurance a condition of an individual barber or cosmetology practitioner license. Many workplaces still require it.
Salon owners, suite landlords, and booth rental agreements commonly ask for a certificate of insurance naming the business as additional insured. Without it, you may not be allowed to work — even if your TDLR license is current.
A policy in your own name also responds (subject to terms) if a client alleges injury or a professional mistake. The shop's policy, if any, is written for the shop — not necessarily for you as an independent contractor.
Solo Texas barbers and stylists doing hair services with no employees can often buy Option 1 online from $193 a year through CoverSmart. Specialty services and salon owners need a custom quote.
